Comprehensive Hearing Exam
First the Specialist will use a Video Otoscope. The
Video Otoscope transmits an image of the inside of
your ear onto a monitor. This will help the specialist
determine if there is any eardrum damage or excessive
cerumen (earwax) and if everything looks in order they
will be able to continue with the test.
The specialist will then do a pure tone test. In the pure
tone test, you will hear a series of tones through a
headphone or inserting a foam earplug in your ear and
it will involve only one ear at a time. This will be done in
several different frequencies and will vary in loudness.
The next test will be a Bone Conduction test. This
involves placing a headset on the mastoid bone behind
the ear.
The specialist will then give you two different word
tests. The first will be a series of two syllable words
that will vary in loudness. This is a verification of the
tone tests previously given and allows the specialist to
check the lowest level you are able to understand
speech.
The second word test will be a series of short words
that may have anywhere from two to six letters and
will be given at a comfortable listening level. This will
tell the specialist how well you are going to understand
normal conversation.
